The Whistler Forum is preparing to take a delegation of Canadians to participate in a two day seminar workshop on Taking Leadership on Corporate Social Responsibility in Canada and China at China Excutive Leadership Academy Pudong (CELAP) this October 22 and 23, 2009. We are focusing on knowledge relating to i) the business case for CSR; ii) multi-perspective collaborative approaches and; iii) the transfer of practises and training in effective CSR implementation.
We are pleased that Dr. Pitman Potter and Dr. Kernaghan Webb, two leading Canadian experts will be presenting on collaborative multi-perspective methods for implementing CSR strategies and for training officials and business leaders. Pitman is the director of the Asia Pacific Dispute Resolution Project and Kernaghan wrote the CSR Manual published by Industry Canada and is involved in the CSR-related work of the Canadian Business Ethics Research Network.
This initiative is timely given the federal government's tabling of CSR Strategy (Building the Canadian Advantage: A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Strategy for the Canadian International Extractive Sector); and the visit to China of our Trade Minister Stockwell Day and Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon.
The Whistler Forum has worked over the past three years engaging in dialogue and leadership on a range of matters with various individuals and groups in China and the Asia Pacific. In September of 2008 we took a group of 25 from the Vancouver/Whistler region to Beijing, Mt Huangshan and Shanghai for first-hand experiences of China and for discussions on sustainability and accessibility planning for communities. We also participated in two days of seminars at CELAP and deepened the Forum's relationships with Mr Jiang, Director General of the Department of International Exchange. This was my third visit to CELAP with discussions each time exploring ways to further the knowledge of and best practises for CSR in both countries.
For the October 22 and 23 workshop seminars at CELAP, the first day involves presentations on CSR in China with researchers and experts at CELAP who are about to publish their work. The next day will involve presentations on CSR in Canada with dialogue on taking leadership in reciprocal ways moving forward. Given the CSR-related work of the Canadian Business Ethics Research Network and the Asia Pacific Dispute Resolution Project at the University of British Columbia, we are collaborating to focus on learning from new and emerging case studies particularly in the extractive sector.
Our three fold goals are: 1) to build a stronger relationship with CELAP and through them officials and CSR researchers in China; 2) to provide up-to-date policy directions and exchange of current knowledge of CSR in both ocuntries; 3) advance understandings of and compliance measures for CSR in the global context.
The entire cost from Wednesday evening October 21 to Saturday morning October 24, including three nights accommodation at CELAP, all meals, material and seminars is $900. This does not include airfare to Shanghai Pudong, nor evening visits to other Shanghai sites.
Participants in teh dlegation need to be confirmed by Friday August 28, 2009. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for further information.
